UT School of Public Health San Antonio Welcomes Rogie Carandang, PhD as Assistant Professor

51²è¹Ý of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio is pleased to announce the appointment of Rogie Royce Z. Carandang, PhD, MPH, MSc, RPh as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society.
Carandang is a pharmacist, health services researcher, and social epidemiologist with expertise in life course research. His interdisciplinary background spans global health, gerontology, maternal and child health, and implementation science. He earned his PhD in Health Sciences (Global Health and Gerontology) from the University of Tokyo, where he also served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Global Health. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in maternal and child health at the University of Connecticut Health Center and holds master’s degrees in Public Health and Aquatic Natural Products Chemistry.
His research focuses on developing evidence-based interventions to advance health access. Using advanced statistical analysis, qualitative inquiry, and mixed methods, Carandang employs community-engaged and interdisciplinary approaches to tackle complex public health challenges. He has led and collaborated on research projects in the Philippines, Japan, Uganda, and the United States.
Among his notable contributions are innovative programs such as Expect With Me, a group prenatal care model aimed at improving perinatal outcomes; the MCH Handbook, adapted into a mobile health application for Russian-speaking communities; and Obstetric Life Support (OBLS), a validated simulation curriculum that trains healthcare providers to manage maternal emergencies. These initiatives have improved clinical care and reduced health disparities for mothers and children worldwide.
Beyond maternal and child health, Carandang has studied the well-being of Community Health Workers and contributed to research in disability, sexual and gender minority health, and pharmacy practice. He supported the development of YourRx and PrescripLine, telepharmacy interventions designed to enhance medication access and adherence. His work has been funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and private nonprofit foundations.
Carandang is also dedicated to mentoring future public health leaders and teaches courses in global health, implementation science, and research methodology.
