Ellen Piehl Pearce, DMD, MS, earns American Board of Periodontology Leslie M. Salkin Award

This year’s winner of the Leslie M. Salkin Award is Ellen Piehl Pearce, DMD, MS, a resident in the Periodontics Program at 51 of Texas at San Antonio School of Dentistry

Leslie M. Salkin served as director of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) from 1995 to 2001 and continued as an oral examination examiner until his passing in 2013. To honor his years of dedicated service, the board created the Leslie M. Salkin Award, presented annually to the candidate who receives the highest score on the ABP Oral Examination, a rigorous two-part, one-day examination held annually as part of the board certification process for the specialty of periodontology.

"I am honored to receive this distinction and am deeply grateful for the training I received at UT San Antonio Health Science Center, where the periodontics program's excellent faculty prepared me for success in my career," said Pearce.

, director of the Periodontics Graduate Program, has now trained two resident students who have gone on to earn this prestigious award. She shared, “This honor is a testament to Dr. Pearce’s exceptional talent, intelligence and dedication throughout her training and beyond. It also reflects the commitment of our program’s outstanding faculty, whose excellence in teaching and preparation helps residents succeed in becoming diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology—the highest professional achievement in our specialty.”

Dr. Pearce's recognition highlights the strength of the periodontics program at the School of Dentistry. Through the dedication of faculty and the rigorous training, the school continues to prepare the next generation of periodontologists, reaffirming its role as a national leader in dental education and specialty training.
